PEO ACWA planned to use this technology, selected by the community for the destruction mission, as part of a two-step process at the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant. The community has been involved in discussions to plan for the safe shipping of liquid waste, or hydrolysate, to an off-site, permitted treatment, storage and disposal facility. The weapons will still be destroyed in accordance with international guidelines and U.S. laws and environmental regulations. The Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP) team is using sophisticated systems, automated robots and tested procedures to safely dismantle and destroy chemical weapons near Richmond, Kentucky. The munitions, which include both rockets and projectiles, contain nerve or mustard agent and have been safely stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot for decades. Watch this video for a step-by-step guide on how the main plant is using neutralization followed by supercritical water oxidation to break down the chemical agent. Please note, some design elements of the plant have been modified or enhanced since this video was produced. BGCAPP is a state-of-the-art facility that is safely destroying the chemical weapons stockpile at the Blue Grass Army Depot near Richmond, Kentucky.
