Today I learned that someone near us has a flock of Guinea fowl that he lets run around, "free range " - in the middle of the road, in this case. I had to herd them off to the side with my car. Cause that's country livin.
I didn't know what they were. Looked like fat chickens with puffin heads.
The good news is they’ll keep the ticks down.
Yes, agreed w/HinTN. They will help with insect management–so do opossums and wild turkeys (the former consume as many as 5,000 ticks in a season). I wouldn’t have realized they were guinea hens from the image–the ones I’ve seen were all black and white speckled. The ones that look grey to me might be speckled and I just can’t tell, though.
yeah, they all had small speckles on their sides and bellies. you can kindof see them on the darker one on the right.
I wonder if they’re somehow related to guinea pigs.
i think it’s probably more the worms…
BTW, when I was doing a search on “guinea pigs” this came up.
hah!
that’s horrible and funny !
Wild turkeys do the same around here, except when you try to herd them with your they want to fight you.
