Last night, instead of sleeping, I had a brilliant idea for a music quiz: for each of the numbers from one to ten, name a song where the very first word of the lyrics is that number - not a number in the title, not a mention in the chorus. The very first word spoken is the number. So, I tried to see if I could do it...
... I couldn't.
- One (Is the Loneliest Number), Split Enz' "One Step Ahead", U2's "In The Name Of Love", etc..
- Beatles' "Two Of Us", Beck's "Farewell Ride", etc.
- "Three is a magic number", and Dylan's "Three Angels"
- Leonard Cohen's "Dress Rehearsal Rag"
- The Doors' "Five To One"
- D-Devils "6th gate"
- Dylan, Seven Days
- Paige comes up with "Eight Miles High".
- Sonny Boy Williamson - Temperature 110
- The Cure's "10:15 Saturday Night", or Spoon's "10:20 AM"
Can any of you fill in the gaps ?
Still need 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Got em!
My first guess was “99 Luftballons”, but 99 is not 9.
Aha: but the first word of “Neun und neunzig Luftballons” is “Neun”.
turns out that’s not even the first verse, though. doh!
“Three is a magic number”

oooh and eight miles high, the byrds.
eight miles high. octuple-doh!
“Three is a magic number”… i’ll pencil it in.
Bob Dylan : Seven Days
Dress Rehearsal Rag, Leonard Cohen (4:00 in the afternoon…)
Three is a magic number should definitely count. It’s been covered by a dozen bands–even Wilco!
Three Nights A Week by Fats Domino
I know you’ve already disqualified “ninety-nine,” but at least it is the first syllable in Toto’s song “99”.
Here’s something kind of similar I got in e-mail from a friend — he promises to send me answers in a few days. See if you can get any of them. Following is a list of numbers; each one was a set of numerals in the title of a #1 pop song.
96 (1966)
2525 (1969)
50 (1976)
1963 (1976)
9 (1981)
2 (1990)
4 (1992)
4 (1997)
21 (2003)
3 (2009)
edit:
oh yeah, and 867-5309 clearly starts with 8nevermind.See if you can get any of them.
2525 is pretty easy
867-5309 was released in 1982, so it can’t be the ‘9’ in 81.
50 is probably ’50 ways to leave your lover’
tough!
That is tough.
I can’t stop thinking of songs that start with numbers now. Ugh! Must get 6 and 9…
This site might help:
http://www.absolutelyrics.com/lyrics/songlist/9/11/
Listed by song titles, not lyrics, though…..
so i cheated, but i found a song with “6.” i was thinking that iron maiden’s number of the beast might start with 666 so i looked it up. it doesn’t, but this song does:
6th gate, by the D-Devils. man, it’s a terrible song. disco heavy metal.

oh, and 867-5309 starts with “Jenny, Jenny,” not the number, doesn’t it?
doh
and for ‘9’, we have Sonny Boy Williamson : Temperature 110
whew!
(anyone up for 11-20 ?)
(anyone up for 11-20 ?)
