Pete!

Pete grabbed and ripped-up a half-loaf of sourdough I had left on the counter. I didn't think he was interested in bread.

I guess Pete’s early digestive problems have left him with the impression that he has malnutrition, and has to counter it at every opportunity. Presumably they’re over? But it may be that as a result of those early experiences he has a lifelong reflex to grab food any time he sees it. I have a friend who took that lesson from our early years at a Dickensian English boarding school – she is never knowingly undercatered – the two of us were together during the 1994 LA earthquake, and she was buying Costco lasagne for 40 people “just in case”!

Or maybe Pete’s just a devilish, rambunctious boy. Either explanation makes sense, and of course they are not mutually exclusive.

yeah, i’m wondering if he was raised that way. we don’t know what his life was like before we got him – was he starving in a ditch somewhere? did his bigger sibling claim all the food? etc..

he’s still not 100% better on the back of things. but his digestion has slowed down enough that he’s gaining weight – he’s almost doubled in weight since we got him. so, as far as nutrition goes, he’s doing fine. he still eats everything we put in front of him, or that he can find, as fast as he can. he never leaves food. this makes things complicated with Pepper, who prefers to graze on dry food at her leisure. but we can’t leave food out for her because Pete will inhale it.

he knows food often comes in plastic bags. so he has chewed into two different bags of dried chili peppers. and a bag of chips. and bag of popcorn. last night, i was cutting a lemon, and because it was clearly food, he wanted some. i let him smell it, and he tried to eat it. he’s nuts.

      he’s also devilish and rambunctious.

i saw that pic on FB and thought the same thing.

i told Pete that we’ll let him live to 19 just like that cat on the internet! but only if he settles down.
