Tight little pop band. Whatever happened to them?

When at barely 12 years old I heard the first three sonically exhilarating words “She Love You” as the Beatles hit the mics in 1963, I immediately went through puberty and stayed there.

And that change from from major to minor in the two middle eights of “From Me To You”, was so fresh on the ears for a pop song at the time, not to mention that cool harmony on the word “satisfied” at the end of the middle eight line was a WTF moment. Goodnight, Ricky Nelson, though I’ve since re-introduced myself to him.

Yeah, go ahead boys, sing “Twist and Shout” to the Queen (“I say, rather plangent don’t you think, duckie?). Steve Bannon and a host of prune-faced tight-asses probably number that as a singular moment for the end of western Christendom, but we know when they are alone, they shake their booties Isley Brothers fashion, while planning a Beatle-record burning south of the Mason-Dixon.

I’m going to sing “And Your Bird Can Sing” at karaoke tomorrow night.

Thanks, cleek. You made my weekend.

YouTube has recently decided that i should watch videos of people demonstrating the glory of John Lennon’s guitar playing (and there dozens of them).

i can’t say it’s something i ever really thought about. i always assumed George was doing all the cool stuff and that John was just strumming along. turns out, John was actually doing interesting stuff back there. and that a lot of the energy in those tunes (especially in the early ones) is entirely due to the way he played rhythm – he was an underrated guitar player, it turns out.
