Minor, Tremolo, Bent Chords

Is there a name for the sub-style of country/rock where the songs are slow, with an electric guitar (usually with a lot of tremolo and reverb) playing sparse minor key leads and big minor chords that get whammied down at the end of verses? It usually got a bit of western feel to it. Everything on Neko Case's Blacklisted, for example.

You could call this “Guitars, pipe down while I’m singing, have at it on the turn around.” Guitars are kind of mid-rangey so you don’t want them stepping all over the vox.

Billy Bragg will palm mute or play quietly when he is singing his verses and let loose when he stops singing. I will do much the same thing for textural and technical reasons.

I admire vocalists who can play bizarre riffs and rhythms and sing. The guy in Dead Meadow does it all the time. But his vocals are never really spectacular.

ok. but i was thinking of something a bit more specific :)

that slow + minor key + tremolo + reverb + downbent-chord combo shows up a lot.

Chris Issack’s “Wicked Game”, Reverend Horton Heat does it. Calexico, etc.. The Good The Bad and The Ugly theme gets close to it. maybe it’s a Texas thing.
