NTT #20 - Results!

Name That Tune #20 is over!

This was a tough one, apparently. The later songs, from 2001 onward, gave most of you a bit of trouble - as expected, honestly. For those later years, I had a hard time finding things I thought people might know, without leaving the confines of my own iTunes collection (which was the second, unstated, theme). Usually, I'll make clips from Amazon or iTunes preview, if I know I want to use a song, but don't have a copy of the song handy. This time, though, I stuck with what I already have, and the pickings were relatively slim for recent years.

Now for the good stuff:

The winner, with a total of 48 points (plus a tie-breaking bonus for ID'ing a song that I had to remove because of screw-up with the date) is:

Snortasprocket

Congratulations, you have won this months Pulitzer Prize* for meritorious achievement in the field of song clip identification!

Sweet.

And a hat-tip to MikeJ for the tie, but without the bonus.

Here are the results and the answers. As always, feel free to double-check my scoring.

Whew.

* - No, not really. Property of the Pulitzer Foundation or whatever, etc..

What a collection! That was a very cool theme, and knowing the year helped me narrow down some of the “That sounds like Steely Dan, but which tune?” kind of questions.

I’m disappointed that I missed some of those — I heard plenty of Death Cab and Arcade Fire on Radio Paradise, but they just didn’t click.

Early on, I wondered if the theme was going to be “songs that start with drum solos.”

Nice job everyone! I ran out of time early this week to do any more listening to this but that is hardly an excuse because I wasn’t sure where to start on some of them. Which is disappointing because I have that Death Cab album. And the Arctic Monkeys. And Radiohead of course. And Arcade Fire. And I never came back and wrote in the Pixies song after listening to it Sunday night! Ugh.

I’ve been thinking of doing an all drone name that tune.

Your Tricky clue was too tricky for me because I thought you’d be trickier and not name say tricky if it were Tricky, which is why I said Massive Attack, who of course Tricky was with.

Also too, I had come up with the Black Keys, but was going to listen to some and come up with the song, never did it, forgot, and so ruined my own chances.

    But congrats to Snortasprocket.

BTW, what was the original #15? I never saw it.

i’m pretty surprised nobody named that one. i had that one down as an easy get.

      what was the original #15?
ZZ Top – Cheap Sunglasses. iTunes had it tagged as a 1984 release, so i picked it for that year. i didn’t realize how wrong that was until i’d posted them.

Also… I blame this quiz and NPR for turning me on to St. Vincent. Good Lord, I haven’t felt so excited about a new talent since I was exposed to Kate Bush waaaaaaay back in the day.

check out some of her live YouTube things.

her Dig A Pony and Marrow, for example. yow.

i wasn’t impressed when i saw her live, but i think it was just a bad mix. and i was completely unfamiliar with her stuff at the time. only took a couple of seconds of iTunes preview to change my mind about her, tho.
